Today I thought I’d tell you a little about my experience with Magic: The Gathering over the years.
I used to play it a great deal back when I was younger, back in the Onslaught, Legion and Scourge days where dragon and beast decks were extremely satisfying and ‘morph’ was all the rage. Back then I mainly had a white soldier deck while I learned the ropes from my friends (usually by losing to them spectacularly).
I kept up the game after I left school by joining the Wednesday Night Magic at Dragon Ally; a fantastic fantasy games shop in Pembroke back home. This is when the Mirrodin block came out and made artifacts popular again with the additions of equipment as well as the introduction of the ‘indestructible’ ability. I also saw the Kamigowa block come out which I think is one of my favorite sets. Ninjas, samurai and all manner of crazy ‘kami’ spirits gave the set a great Japanese stylistic edge.
But…
With things like University coming up, magic fell by the wayside and I almost forgot about it entirely. Fortunately my best friend Michelle reintroduced me to the game and funnily enough the most recent block out was Scars of Mirrodin so I settled right back into it.
Currently I have three usable decks.
1: Modified black and red ‘Feast of Flesh’: New Phyrexia Intro Pack altered to what I like to call ‘Annoying Attrition’ and includes the Planeswalker ‘Karn Liberated’.
2: White ‘Samurai’: Made from the Kamigowa and both old and new Mirrodin sets so it’s not for standard play. In my opinion, samurai are some of the best ‘white weenies’ around because of their ‘Bushido’ ability, which gives them +1/+1 when they block or become blocked for each Bushido point they have.
3: Green ‘Snakes’: Kamigowa block and used to be my main deck but now more of a back up/ practice deck.
I’m very looking forward to Expo in May so I can put a couple of my decks through their paces so if anyone would like a game, let me know and I’ll see you at the Friday night meet.
Until next time amigos.
